Slowing economic data from China and the continuing government shutdown weighed on U.S. market indexes, which traded in negative territory for most of the day. The three major indexes rebounded in late day trading, starting the year higher after reporting steep annual losses in 2018 that matched the market's returns in 2008. On Wednesday, President Trump and Congressional leaders were scheduled to meet at the White House to discuss ongoing border funding conflicts, which have been the main factor in government budget negotiations.
In the S&P 500, oil price gains helped energy sector stocks, which reported a return of 1.28%. The 10-year Treasury also reported new lows on Wednesday with the yield falling to 2.663%
The Markit Manufacturing PMI was the only major report on Wednesday's economic calendar. The Index decreased to 53.8 in December from 53.9.
